What is Acne ?

Understanding Acne

  • Acne is a common skin condition characterized by the appearance of pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, and sometimes deeper lumps (cysts or nodules) on the skin.

  • It is a multifactorial disease that involves the sebaceous glands at the base of hair follicles and primarily affects adolescents and young adults, although it can persist into adulthood. The skin contains sebaceous glands that produce an oily substance that helps maintain skin moisture and protection. However, excess sebum production, often caused by hormonal changes, combined with the shedding of dead skin cells, can leadto the blockage of skin pores.

  • This blockage is called a comedo. The comedo structure, containing excess sebum and dead cells, provides a fertile ground for the proliferation of bacteria living on our skin, including the bacterium Propionibacterium acnes. As a result of the bacterial overgrowth within the comedo structure, inflammation in the skin begins, leading to the formation of inflamed lesions - these are the familiar acne pimples.

What are the causes of acne?

  • Hormonal Changes: Acne is most common among adolescents due to hormonal changes that occur during puberty, which stimulate the sebaceous glands and increase oil production. These hormonal fluctuations can also occur during pregnancy, menstruation, and the use of oral contraceptives.

  • Genetics: A family history of acne may increase susceptibility to its development, suggesting a genetic component.

  • Diet: Although the link between diet and acne is still debated, some studies indicate that certain foods, especially those high in carbohydrates and dairy products, may exacerbate acne in certain individuals.

  • Bacteria: The presence of the bacterium Propionibacterium acnes on the skin can contribute to inflammation and the formation of pimples.

  • Other Factors: Stress, certain medications, and the use of oily or greasy personal care products can also contribute to the development of acne.

  1.
